Curriculum Areas: Humanities, Health and Career Education
Time Periods: 3-4 periods
Learning Goal: Students will be exploring the influences of media advertisements in their lives. To demonstrate their learning, students will create a digital presentation to analyze media ads about their messages, their purpose (what adverts what people to do), and how viewers can question these ads.
Student Tasks: In the movie, Riley’s memory of the Triple Dent Gum advertisement constantly pops up (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euwgRSt5Nrs). Your task is to explore a media advertisement in your life and analyze its underlying message and to become aware of your own reactions as a potential consumer.
Choose a media advertisement
Reflect and write about:
The structure and format of the ad?
What is the ad saying?
Who is the target audience of the ad?
What are your reactions to this ad?
What makes this ad “stuck in your head”?
Create a digital presentation using a tool of your choice about your findings
Be sure to include a clip of your media ad in the presentation!
Students discuss and share (on chart paper or in journals):
The structure and format of the ad?
What is the ad saying?
Who is the target audience of the ad?
What are reactions of Riley’s emotions to this ad?
What makes this ad a constantly memory for Riley?
Depending on familiarity with online presentation tools, you may need to briefly introduce several examples and allow students to explore different formats
