Curriculum Expectations: Writing, Media Literacy, Art, Health
Time: 3-4 periods (50 minute periods)
Learning Goal: To plan for and create a stop motion of a dream with the inclusion of at least 2 emotions from the film Inside Out. Students will understand the process of still photography and the requirement for slow frame-by-frame shots for smooth animation.
Student Task You have just entered Dream Productions, a movie studio, and they have asked you to choreograph a dream for tonight. You will be bringing your dream to life by producing a Stop Motion Animation. You must, in your dream production, explore at least 2 out of the 5 emotions demonstrated in the movie (Joy, Fear, Disgust, Sadness and/or Anger). If you wish, you can also add other emotions to your Stop Motion (such as Grief, Pride, Anxiety, Confidence, etc.). The stop motions must:
Be a least 45 seconds in length
Can be made from Play Doh or other materials such as Lego, paper cut outs, pipecleaners or toys
Teacher’s Notes Students will need access to a camera (webcam, tablet camera, personal handheld device, etc.). If students are using any Apple products, they can use iMovie to create their Stop Motion. They can use Windows Movie Maker if using a PC.
Students will begin by creating a storyboard. Template can be found here. Students should be able to successfully answer these questions before moving on to their Stop Motion: -Does the storyboard effectively demonstrate the actions that will take place in your Stop Motion? -Have you included at least 2 out of the 5 emotions from the movie Inside Out?
Students will be asked to create dialogue throughout their stop motions. The dialogue should enhance the animation and should discuss the importance of regulating our emotions. For a how-to of creating Stop Motion Animations, take a look at this link.
