Activity 2: Curriculum Expectations: Media Literacy, Health Education
Time: 2 periods (80 minute periods) Activity Overview: For this activity students will be working as a group to create video presentations of a given scenario from the perspective of an assigned emotion. A post activity discussion, comparing and contrasting each emotions perspective of both scenarios, will help students solidify their understanding and abilities to recognize each emotion. The basis for the activity is to provide students with the opportunity to engage with their comprehension of the differences between each of the five emotions in Inside Out. Students are encouraged to acknowledge the benefits that their specific emotion has on the conclusion of their given scenario within their video.
Activity Instructions:
Use the provided grouping flow chart to create groups for the following activity.
Give the following scenarios out to emotion groups as per the grouping flow chart.
Potential Scenarios (here as examples but can be altered to best suite your students):
You just noticed your classmate is using your favourite new pen without permission. What do you think? How do you react?
You walk outside to fresh new snow for the first time this year. What do you think? How do you react?
Instruct groups to create a 3-4 minute video of their given scenario from the viewpoint of their emotion, using the video creation tool of their choice (ex/ iMovie).
Encourage students to think about the context and reason behind the event in order to depict how the various emotions may think/feel.
Once each of the groups have completed their videos, watch them as a class and have students guess which emotion group created which video.
Extension questions: After viewing all of the five emotions for each scenario, have students discuss the differences in how the emotions responded.
What components of the video gave away the specific emotion?
Where have you reacted in an emotional manner when perhaps you could have reacted with a different emotion instead?
